Big Idea presents the bold work of two Los Angeles artists: Abel Alejandre and Kiel Johnson. Both tell stories through portraiture, devote copious amounts of time to their process, and transform humble materials into remarkable forms through an obsession of masterful mark-making.
Abel Alejandre’s symbolic portraits reveal both the power and vulnerability of the common man. His work explores themes of identity conflict, expectations and personal evolution. His masterful use of line, reminiscent of classical etchings, accentuates the brave assertiveness and honesty within his subject matter.
Kiel Johnson creates detailed portraits of everyday objects and elaborate systems. His intricate depictions are compelling and gregarious, and deal with issues of simplicity, complexity and diversity. His cardboard sculptures are drawings that have exploded into a 3-dimensional world, a world that invites us to joyfully linger and explore.
